Enjoy great cakes and delicious Devon cream teas close to Lynton.
There’s nothing we love more than getting out and about in Exmoor for a long walk or scenic drive, especially when the sun is beaming down. But an Exmoor day out wouldn’t be complete without stopping for tea and cake in a beautiful place.
Here’s a few of our favourite places to enjoy a great cream tea or homemade cakes in Lynton and further away.
The Picnic Box is a delightful café located near the church in the old town of Lynton. Here you can choose from a range of freshly made sandwiches, baguettes, salads and daily hot specials. The cheese, meat or vegan ploughman’s is quite the feast too, but it’s their selection of homemade cakes that are really worth mentioning. Each day there’s something different to choose from including a selection of gluten-free cakes and desserts. We really like this lovely corner café’s chilled and cosy atmosphere with gentle classical music in the background.
For a really sweet tooth we love Charlie Friday’s for their really decadent homemade cakes and daily sugary creations. Charlie Friday’s is located on the Church Steps near St Mary’s Church in Lynton. Experience blueberry and white chocolate, or dark chocolate & orange scones – the creativity at Charlie’s is almost endless. The atmosphere here is funky and lively welcoming everyone and their dog – there’s a real buzz here. Charlie Friday’s offers an extensive selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes with plenty of daily specials.
If cheesecake is your weakness then look no further than the No.1 in Lynton. These guys create the most delicious homemade cheesecakes – very decadent and luxurious flavours and combinations. And of course you can get a great Cream Tea here too. They also have a great menu for hot and cold food; sandwiches to chilli-con-carne, toasties to cottage pie – and a great build-your-own burger selection. And for those preferring gluten-free options, they have you covered too.

Woody Bay Station, this doesn’t sound like a relaxing place to enjoy tea and cake – but it really is a delight. Located just outside of Lynton, on the way to Barnstaple, the Woody Bay Station offers a wonderful range of homemade cakes, sandwiches and other savoury treats.
The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway runs from this station and it’s one of the last narrow-gauge railway adventures with steam trains running on most days. The tea room is located just next to the station house with a beautiful garden surrounded by woodland. Hearing the toot-toot, chuffing and clickety-clack of these gorgeous old steam engines is quite mesmerising – quite magical.
Further away from Lynton in Selworthy is Periwinkle Tea Rooms, a real chocolate box location. We love heading out this way, not just for tea and cake but also some incredible walks. The scrumptious homemade cakes make for a great reward.
Every savoury and sweet dish is lovingly made each day in the cottage kitchen. The ambience at Periwinkle is magical, the thatched cottages in Selworthy look like places only heard of in fairy tales. The beautiful cottage garden is the perfect place to sit to while away a Summer afternoon.
