Lynbridge to Watersmeet

A winding, ridge walk along Summerhouse Hill to Watersmeet.

This is a stunning walk, with breathtaking valley views.

Approx: 3-4hrs |

This is a perfect way to get to Watersmeet, avoiding much of the tourist foot traffic. After leaving Highcliffe House take the first right onto Lyn Way.  The public footpath ‘Lyn Way’, is located below Highcliffe’s driveway, signposted to Sinai House and Summerhouse Hill. Carry on along the footpath to the end which will come out by a pub called the Cottage Inn.

Walk down into the car park just passed the pub and cross the bridge over the West Lyn River. Continue walking to the left and follow the wooded walk. Walk up the hillside with the river now to your right. At the top, continue walking around the headland. Follow the stone wall until the path divides.

The path divides at the top of the hill. Instead of turning left for Lynmouth, continue walking along the stone wall and follow the signs for Watersmeet. At the gate by the little water pumping station keep the pump on your left.

Watersmeet is a National Trust location, complete with a gorgeous tea room and gardens. Read more about this stunning location here.

From Watersmeet the whole return journey to Lynmouth can be made along the riverbank.

Getting back to Highcliffe House

  1. Walk back up the ‘zig zag’ path – remembering how steep it is
  2. Take the Cliff Railway from Lynmouth to Lynton
  3. Walk back up the main Lynmouth Hill road.  This is not the best of walks and can be dangerous as there are no footpaths.
  4. Call one of Lynton’s taxis
