Romance at the Movies
Lynton even has its own cinema, which is the perfect place to enjoy the latest blockbuster complete with popcorn and candy. The cinema is a 5-10 minute walk from Highcliffe House and on the doorstep of the local cafés and restaurants. Check out the Lynton Cinema here. But if you don't want to venture out, choose a movie from our extensive DVD library with a bottle of bubbles and some chocolate.
Lynton & Lynmouth are the walking capital of the Exmoor National Park, and when you arrive it's easy to see why. There are miles and miles of walks and trails, many of them starting at Highcliffe's front door. Two of our favourite walks are the Valley of Rocks and Watersmeet.
The walk to the Valley of Rocks takes you on a section of the South West Coastal Path and it's breathtaking. This is a precipitous cliff walk with spectacular sea views, ragged cliffs and crashing waves. It's one of the best places to enjoy a very romantic stroll to watch one of Exmoor's incredible sunsets. Take a bottle of bubbles, a rug and stretch out to watch the day fade into darkness as star after star dots the night sky. Exmoor is a Dark Sky Reserve which means there is very little light pollution - it's magical.
The walk to Watersmeet is probably as romantic as it gets. This is the most wonderful valley walk along the East Lyn River to the picturesque water haven of Watersmeet. The East Lyn River is icy cold and torrential with one cascade after another, with rock pools and bijou waterfalls. Walk past some of Lynmouth's long lost heritage washed away by the great flood of 1952 to Watersmeet House. The National Trust owned property is like a magical fairytale cottage serving delicious snacks and drinks, in beautiful riverside gardens. It's really special - no wonder it's one of Julia Bradbury's favourite UK walks.
A romantic dinner for two
There are some exceptionally good places to eat in Lynton & Lynmouth and the surrounding area. Enjoy a light and breezy meal at the Vanilla Pod, Mediterranean-style food with a Middle Eastern twist. Love tapas? Head to the Oak Room for some deliciously authentic Spanish classics with an excellent selection of wine. How about really setting your taste buds alight? Try one of Nartnapa’s Thai meals at the Cottage Inn, they’re the best you’ll eat outside of Thailand.
Or if you’re looking for something a little more local and down-to-earth. Tuck into a hearty home-cooked meal at the Fox & Goose, or a gourmet dish at 7 The Bistro - real crowd pleasers. If you really want to splash out, try the Rising Sun or one of the more fancier Mitchelin-star restaurants like Micheal Caines ‘The Coach House’. Whatever your palate or budget, there’s something special everyone.
