Visiting Lynton and Lynmouth?
Lynton and Lynmouth are two villages which are nicely situated on the coast of North Devon in the Exmoor National Park. During the Victorian times, these places were coined with the nickname ‘little Switzerland’ – perhaps with the view above, it is easy to see where they were coming from.
Lynton is higher in elevation of the two areas, and is everything you would expect from an attractive, welcoming and drawing North Devon village. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops for you to explore and don’t forget the Lynton Town Hall which has a centre for visitors, offering a wide range of localised events. For example this includes a Farmers Market on the first Saturday of every month starting at 10am. Lynton also offers its own cosy cinema and allows you to escape from some of the commercial and generic natures of regular larger cinemas.
Lynmouth is around 500ft lower in elevation than Lynton and is in essence the harbour part of the local area. Despite the distance, the two places are linked together by a cliff railway. This is a popular attraction and well worth trying. There is also a generalised local track railway which runs through the area (called the Lynton and Barnstaple railway.)
Two Towns Two Rivers
The two towns also house the East Lyn and Hoaroak rivers which come together at Watersmeet. They cascade downwards on route out into the sea. During the early 1950s, these two rivers flooded very heavily and homes were swept away into the sea. This reminds us that although nature is pretty to watch it sometimes bring calamity. Illustrations of the flood can be seen in the local memorial hall.
Since these towns are situated on the South West Coastal Path, walking and more adventurous activities are also on offer.
Many places we are ‘twinned’ with somewhere, Lynton & Lynmouth happens to be Benouville in France.
We recommend that you stay at least a few days – a weekend or longer. This gives you time to fully explore and enjoy the beauty of the area.
